Holistic Exercise

What does “holistic” mean? Holistic means that you consider something as a whole, knowing that all aspects are interconnected and interrelated. When we take a holistic approach to human health we know that the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual are all connected. This is powerful to know because it means that as you treat the physical body it will affect the mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies. Here is an example: when you avoid eating your allergic foods you feel better physically (reducing or eliminating symptoms of disease) and you will also feel more emotionally balanced and happy, more spiritually connected, and more mentally clear and sharp. Now you can leverage the knowledge that all bodies are connected when you are deciding what exercise to do.

When it comes to choosing the kind of exercise consider what you want to experience on the other levels (mental, emotional, and spiritual). Here are a few examples of exercises and what they mean holistically:

Lifting Weights: Lift weights if you want to become mentally stronger, more emotionally resilient, and strengthen your spiritual connection.

Walking, Running, Jogging: Walk, run, or jog if you want to leave past hurts behind, move forward in your life, or embark on a new project.

Yoga, Pilates: Do exercises that strengthen your core when you are learning how to set your spiritual and emotional boundaries.

Judo, Karate, Tai Chi: These exercises strengthen your core and your balance. They are good for when you are learning how to set your emotional and spiritual boundaries.

Swimming: It is time to “go with the flow” and lighten any emotional weight you have been carrying!

Stretching: Stretching makes you more flexible physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Stretching helps keep your mind pliable and open to new ideas.

Partner Dancing (leading): Traditionally men take the role of leader in partner dancing (ballroom, Latin, swing). If you are a man and want to improve your leadership skills then learn to dance.

Partner Dancing (following): Traditionally women take the role of follower in partner dancing (ballroom, Latin, swing). If you are a woman and want to learn to increase (and follow) your inner, spiritual guidance then learn to dance.

What form of exercise do you enjoy doing?

Wishing you vibrant health,
Monica
